Calathea ornata

Calathea ornata

  • Aka: pinstripe, velvet, feather
  • Origin: South America, Columbia – non-toxic
  • Family: Marantaceae
  • Temperature: 17 - 23 °C, Hardiness: 10-11 Humidity: 80-90%

These artistic oval-shaped leaves have dark green foliage and thin pale pink stripes that look like they have been painted on that make it an attractive plant to have in your home.

All calatheas like lots of bright indirect light, high humidity and moist soil, but not wet and soggy soil so when the top 1/3 of the soil is dry, water thoroughly and let all excess water drain out of the pot before putting it back into the decorative pot. The soil should be well-draining and loose but be able to retain some water by adding perlite or Vermiculite which will help with both. High humidity and leaves can be cleaned off with a soft cloth when dusty.

Prone to spider mites and root-rot.
